Today’s post is part of a Flashback Friday Prom Picture event conceived by and posted in conjunction with the awesome Stiletto Mom. Please head over there and check out her pictures, because she went to Prom in 1983 people, and she promises a Pepto Bismol colored formal dress.
The year is 1991. “I Wanna Sex You Up” by Color Me Badd is playing relentlessly on the radio. That spring I had a sort-of boyfriend whom I had been dating for a while. And by a while I mean a few weeks. For me that was epic. We were supposed to go to the Prom and I had gone to a large mall out of town with my mom to buy a dress. Then the sort-of-boyfriend wrecked his truck spinning brodies and was in all sorts of trouble with his parents and backed out of going to the prom. I think you can imagine how unhappy I was with him. He tried to suggest alternate plans for that evening, but I was having none of it. I had a dress hanging up in my closet and I was going to wear it.
There was a really cute boy who sat in front of me in Señor Hernandez’s Spanish III class. He overheard me discussing the distressing turn of events my prom plans had taken with my friend Jane and mentioned that his date, who was supposed to come in from the Bay Area to go with him, had bailed also.
Did I want to go with him?
Not only did I go to my Junior Prom with him, I married him 8 years later.
The Prom was our first official date. We listened to EMF ‘Unbelievable’ over and over again in the car and went out to a fancy dinner with a huge group of people, then to a party at a motel. We never set foot inside the actual dance. After we left the party some of us headed back to my parent’s house, which was conveniently empty as my Mom and Dad were away at my Aunt’s wedding that night. I believe we smoked a joint the size of a tampon, knocked back some beers and then I fell asleep on my parent’s gigantic sectional sofa. Poor Mr. C never even got a good night kiss.

When I woke up the next morning he was gone. We went out once or twice after that but then he graduated and moved away. It wasn’t until a few years later that we really started dating seriously.
For me the best thing about our prom picture is that Mr. Caffeinated is wearing a Z Cavaricci suit instead of a tux. He loved that suit and at the time it was hawt. I’m not quite sure why I chose to wear full length gloves. They’re a bit much. Also, the florist decided to dye the Baby’s Breath on my corsage black, so everything just blends in. I did manage to poof my hair out quite a bit, and you may have noticed that I had a penchant for fuchsia lipstick back then.

Me and the girls changed out of our formal dresses and got into full on party mode. I loved my Aunt so much for getting married on Prom night.
Here’s another one from ‘91, not a prom pic but from a Backwards Dance. That’s what we called our Sadie Hawkin’s type dance when the girl asks the guy. I included it here because my hair is so big as to be ridiculous. Also, I wish I could go back in time and wax my eyebrows.

I blurred my date’s face out because I haven’t spoken to the guy in about 16 years and I’m not sure how he would feel about me using his picture here. Also, I’m not sure why we’re standing in a castle. I really miss how easy it was to style my hair back then. I went through truckloads of shampoo, conditioner, hairspray and Vavoom Glazing. All I had to do was blow dry it upside down and then pick it out some, scrunch the curl with spritz and then hair spray the bejeezus out of it. Those were the days.
Senior Prom 1992. I went with the same blurred out date that I went to the Backwards Dance with. I distinctly remember when I found the dress. My Mom and I had been kind of shopping around for a couple of weeks, and then I happened to come across a long black velvet column dress at some little out of the way shop. It was $99.

I have almost no memory of that night. It’s just gone. I guess I remember my junior prom so well because I went with Danny and he ended up being my husband. I have a lot of pictures of myself in that dress, though.

Here’s me and Mom. Talk about some big hair. You can see where I learned my technique from. I also have to laugh at the country blue and mauve wall border behind us. Our whole house was decorated in country blue and mauve for a few years.

That’s my best friend Diann. Her purple sequined dress was knee length when she bought it but she took it to a seamstress and had it shortened to a mini. That cracks me up. She had great legs, though. Still does. Might as well show ‘em off.
That wraps up my big haired, sequined Prom Flashback, kids. If you are posting your own prom pics today, make sure you comment here or at The Stiletto Mom and we will link back to you. Thanks for playing along!

http://foradifferentkindofgirl.blogspot.com/2009/05/what-about-prom-blane-no-what-about.html
I just read FADKOG’s prom post and I have to say – it’s by far one of the funniest things I’ve ever read.
This was an excellent pictoral as well. I have so few pictures from dances… I don’t know why I was so camera shy back then. But our dresses weren’t all that interesting – pretty conservative for the late 80s. I do remember a lot of poofy hair though, so your ‘do brings back a lot of memories.
Damn, woman, you were even hot then!

Love your pics! —And a great story too!
Class of ‘96 Rulz! hehe
You looked beautiful in every one of those pics. I had that same blue shimmery dress for homecoming one year, felt like a mermaid when I wore it.
Here is my prom post with my sweetheart:

Off to work now.
We both had our proms in 1991! That means we are noth 25 years old.
I can’t believe you married your prom date! How cute are you?
Mine was a jerrrrrrrrk!
I posted a picture today, too!
I’ll be posting later today. I can’t wait to check everyone out. I have a crazy morning. That hair.
Ok! This is not really fair b/c you were smokin’ hot at your proms! And taking your future husband to prom? I give up! You win!
My story is posted!
I posted my sister’s prom picture and my lack of! http://www.spriteskeeper.com
Thanks for letting me tag the Spin Cycle!
By the way, HAWT!
Love Mr. C’s hair, I believe Color Me Badd is actually the group that welcomed in the metrosexual with the hairstyles, or it could have been New Kids..
Sadly, I didn’t go to my own prom. I did go (as a junior) to the prom of the guy I was dating at another school. Great guy…horrible dress. Dear God, the 70s were Hell.
I haven’t read your post YET, but mine is up:

back w/a real comment later.
NO FREAKIN’ WAY.. we had almost the same dress (mine’s a bit more vintage after all I was Might Fine in 89.. or class slogan.. argh). And the hair too! I’m so glad I didn’t marry mine though. He did end up doing that with my best frenmy (her loss) for a few years and one kid. I’ve got to find my Sadie Hawkins pics and post about them as my date is now the local peditrian back home.. I’m fer shur He’d LOVE THAT!
dude! your husband’s suit! i’m dying!
Ditto–you actually looked great. OK, the hair. But that suit! All those pleats! Are you sure you don’t want to blur his face? I think you owe it to YOUR HUSBAND not to humiliate him in front of a bunch of squeeeing bloggers!
He is cute. I should have taken Spanish. And gone to a co-ed high school.
Your friend’s sunglasses are super cool but the Z Cavarrici’s brought back memories. I once borrowed a friend’s neighbor’s pair to wear to school one day since my parents were way too poor to buy me a pair. Good times.
You were hot in the 80’s, big hair suits you!
Oh, I love the Bright Lights, Big City background!
And love the jointtampon comparison. NICE!
Here’s my post, and thanks for such a FUN idea!
http://www.papatv.com/2009/05/can-you-spot-the-prom-picture.html
That’s a wonderful photo–good thing you married him so you didn’t have to ask permission to publish it.
And now I’m wondering if you two still smoke joints as big as tampons or if the recession has whittled them down a bit.
Hey at least you went to one of your proms with your hubs. That hair is FAB I had the same due I just wasn’t in high school yet then!
And OMG the Z Cavaricci suit is cracking me up! love it
Off to look at more thanks for the link up
You look so great in your pictures! I’m so glad big hair has had its day and gone, though. My hair was never able to measure up- the more hairspray I used, the more it coughed and choked and died on me. FADKOG’s post was so great it inspired me to dig out my photos. And to bookmark both yours and Stiletto Mom’s blogs as well. Anyway, here’s my link:

God, I love Flashblack Fridays. Wait! Who was hit “Date” from the bay area?!!!
I also am proud to say I wore the Z Cav suit the following year! Yes, I rocked it…
hi! i’ve lurked around your site before but i don’t remember commenting (unless it was a sleep depraved, wine influenced comment).
i LOVE the background on your senior prom pic! it is right out of an 80’s brat pack movie!
i’ve played along too!
you had the most awesome hair!!!! seriously. I would have given away my george michael tapes to get hair like yours!!
Great, now I’m gonna have “I”m Gonna Sex You Up” in my head all day long.
I’m totally jealous of the hair. I couldn’t quite get mine that long, but what I lacked in length I more than made up for in height.
http://thedailysnark.wordpress.com/2009/05/15/like-totally-80s/
I love these pictures.
I also married my prom date
I loooove the hair. Hey I went to from from 1999-2003 and I STILL had huge hair. It wasn’t in. And I requested it.
I left my douchey senior prom date at the door. He tried to cop a feel. Dude. Not until the last dance, kay?
(I kid, I kid!) (Kinda.)
It’s ALIVE!!!!! That last corsage looks like it came from Little Shop Of Horrors! Not in the ugly way but in the ate Cleveland way….and I really don’t have any prom pictures. Not holding out. It was Northern California. We were hippies. What can I say…
Your big hair made me jealous all over again. My mom had height limits… But it did inspire me to post myself. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

ok, fine. I’ll post. And I chose late at night…so less people will see the horror
Gah.
http://keirajoy07.blogspot.com/2009/05/its-like-totallya.html
His suit? hilarious.
Your hair? ginormous.
That black dress? fabulous.
If that describes an ‘easy’ way to style your hair, I’d hate to know what you go through now. I wash mine and then comb it. that’s. it. lol (I’m so lazy)
Thank you for linking me up! sorry I’m late to the party (story of my life
), had a crazy busy day yesterday, but enjoying catching up today!
Those were awesom and hilarious pictures. I so remember that era. My scanner wasn’t working so I didn’t get to post my pictures!! I’m so sad.
OMG! You were (ARE) beautiful All that hair! I finally got my post up. I had a difficult time finding my pictures, but I got em!
Whoa – you’re hot!
